Agata says: I liked the origami and playing with my friends.

Eloise says: I liked Tim showing the cricket things. I learnt how to use the equipment ad how the players use it.

William: I liked looking at the cricket kit, the bat especially.

Joe: I enjoyed the cricket kit, I enjoyed it all but that was the best.

Joe: I liked the club shop, looking round at the cricket bats.

Laune: I liked Albartus, the room with the control panel: odd one out.

Harriet says “It was fun, because we got to see all the players and watch the game.”

Rose says “I wish in year 6 we could come here again as today has been a great day.”

Tequisha says “I really really enjoyed today, esp the circus skills. Even though I don’t know about cricket I liked watching the game.”

Hannah says “I liked making the wicket stumps. Also the stadium tour.”

Kavan said “It wa good because we watched the england U19 vs Pakistan.”

Sean: “Can’t wait until I play cricket on Wednesday.”

Josh “I liked watching the players training in the indoor arena.”

Connor : “I liked the stadium tour because watched some of the match.”

Vicki (stolen from Saints but really wants to work at Steelbacks) says “The children were very enthusiastic. They loved the comic life.”

Sara: “I now understand a little bit more about the cricket. The kids are teaching me well.”

Tim (cricket extrodinaire) the children were fun and really enjoyed the circus skills. Go TEAM!”

Myra “The children learnt their new computer skills (apple) quickly. They had to use 2 new programmes.”

Anna says “What a lot of children, 18! we must surely hold the record for the most amount of kids in the smallest room. They are getting on well with the stumps and bails designing.”

Activity 1: Global warming: electricity, saving electricity, alternative energy like: wind, sun, water. Comic life programme: cartoon strip, photos, captions, speech bubbles, titles. Amy did ’save the planet’, Gareth did ‘global warming’, Harmony did ‘Wasting energy’, Ethan did ‘Different forms of transport instead of cars/planes’, Lewis D did ’saving energy’, Lewis G did ‘global warming’.

Activity 2: Bag making using recycled paper: cricket magazines. It was easy because listened to instructions. Gareth found it hard because he didn’t understand it at first. Lewis D was pleased with his because he liked the labels. Gareth liked the tags.

Activity 3: sports: cricket/football. We played a kwik cricket game and we all got hot. Ethan, Lewis, Amy vs Gareth, Lewis, Harmony. Gareth thought we got better at catching. Amy said she got better at hitting the ball. Lewis D got in a mardy because he couldn’t throw the ball accurately. Harmony found it hard to throw the ball straight.
Skills practised: warm up, throwing (under and over), bowling.
Football: played a match, the teachers didn’t play, they chatted. (about important educational things) Gareth, Ethan, Amy beat Lewis, Lewis and Harmony.

On the way back to the centre, we got drenched, Lewis G said it was better than a water fight. Now we are all soaking. Gareth, Harmony dropped their jumpers in the puddles.

Myra said about today: “I’m looking forward to going to Brixworth tomorrow.”
Yvonne (new steelbacks boss lady) Said “I thought the children were brilliant at saving energy.”
Anna said “Oh my goodness the listening skills of SOME children are dire!”

Activity 1: we made wickets and bales using paper. To test them we threw a paper ball to make the bales fall.

Activity 2: We visited the club shop to see what we could put on our poster. We did a questionnaire about the kinds of clothes in the shop. When we got back, we made posters for our own cricket shops: Lewis G called his ‘Biltons’, it sold cricket tops, helmets, bats. Ethan’s shop was ‘Ethan’s mega marvelous shop’, selling shorts and a top, cricket bat, balls and helmets. It was cheap prices.

Activity 3: We tried on the cricket equipment, talking about the different parts on the helmet, safety, badges and logos. We all looked good in the kit.

Activity 4: Albartus game: mystery of time and space: teamwork was needed because it was hard and we helped each other. It was like a brain test, it made you think (Harmony, Amy) the hardest room was the rat room. We were doing it for 1 and half hours, we liked it so much we went home and did it. Gareth played it with his dad at home.

Lewis Dawson says: “I liked using the computers, we used photos to make a name badge, also to make a player profile about me. The cricket players were throwing the ball and whacking it, they are playing tommorrow.”

Amy Birch: “We are making wickets and stumps and bales using selotape, paper and scissors. I have decorated mine with squiggles and my name. I enjoyed walking around the stadium, we saw the sponsor signs and pitch.”

Lewis Galpin: “We did circus skills, I learnt juggling and we played a team game with pipes. You had to get the ball from one ring to another about 10 metres.”

Gareth: “My highlight was watching the players practice and making the cricket stumps.”

Harmony: :The best bit was looking around the stadium, I learnt that I didn’t know it was this big.”

A huge thank you goes to Jonny and Peter (along with Myra) who have obviously worked very hard last week to make Kingsley primary school’s summer challenge at the Steelbacks so successful and enjoyable. I had no worries in leaving the boys in charge and when I popped in (taking a break from jury service) they had it under control. The children told me what they had been doing, what they were working on and what they had learnt.

Some evaluation comments I heard:
“I was so excited about coming to the Steelbacks this morning that I woke up really early and couldn’t get back to sleep.”
“Even though I had a broken wrist, I wanted to come and told my mum I just had to come. Otherwise I would have missed out.”

It sounds as though Peter used the summer challenge lessons and put a different spin on them, which is great as we like to share practice here. Having Jonny as sports-coach extrodinaire was also brilliant and the children enjoyed their practical sessions immensely.

Thanks to Myra too for keeping the boys in line (?!) and helping them feel at home in their ‘borrowed’ centre.

Caption Competition 1

Ready for ActionWe have been exploring the world of merchandising today, concentrating our efforts around the club shop and the sponsors’ boards displayed around the pitch. We also drifted into a world of figurative language as we described what we could see, hear and smell around the ground. Kingsley’s Year Five teacher has clearly taught them well and it was a pleasure to witness their creativity in action.

We also played one and a half innings of cricket in the indoor nets - the Diamond Heads have 53 to beat tomorrow morning. It could have been far worse though if Hamaad had not caught Jonny just a she was begining to cut loose. To finish off in the afternoon we had a close look at the equipment and kit a cricketer has to wear.
